My 2009 reading log

vylotteThese are the books I read in 2009, I made the goal of 50 spot on (with a little bit of a rush there at the end). They are in order of reading. Thanks to Goodreads for keeping track for me.
1. The Ivory and the Horn (Newford, #6),de Lint, Charles - I enjoy his tales of urban fantasy set in his city of Newford
2. Kushiel's Avatar (Kushiel's Legacy, #3), Carey, Jacqueline - I love these stupid books so much. Intricately plotted, kinda pervy, what's not to like. This may be the best of the bunch.
3. House of Leaves, Danielewski, Mark Z. - I wanted to like this, I really did. But alas, it bored me silly. Still, props for going outside the box (literally)
4. Guilty Pleasures (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, #1), Hamilton, Laurell K. - Pretty amateurish, I thought. I hear they get better. I probably won't check.
5. Song of Susannah (Dark Tower, #6), King, Stephen - Love love love these books. Can't believe it took me so long to read the series.
6. Gothic Art Now, Becket-Griffith, Jasmine - A nice change of pace from all the epic fantasies, a book of dark art. No real surprises.
7. Locke & Key, Vol. 1: Welcome to Lovecraft, Hill, Joe - Graphic novel written by the author of "Heart-Shaped Box" and "20th Century Ghosts." He's a talent to watch.
8. Kushiel's Scion (Kushiel's Legacy, #4), Carey, Jacqueline - The new narrator, Imri, is a bit insufferable at times, but still good stuff.
9. The Dark Tower (Dark Tower, #7), King, Stephen - The end of the series and it was well worth the journey.
10. Angel: After the Fall: First Night Volume 2, Whedon, Joss - Angel Season 6 as graphic novels. Los Angeles finally goes to hell for real.
11. Only Begotten Daughter, Morrow, James - I was surprised how entertaining this was. My decades in Christian schools probably helped though, I got all the in-jokes.
12. The Stand: Captain Trips, Aguirre-Sacasa, Roberto - the first of a series of graphic novels based on the book. So far so good.
13. The Knitting Circle: A Novel, Hood, Ann - a departure from my normal choices of scifi and fantasy, but a good read. Crocheting is better, people! (hmph)
14. Angel: After the Fall, Vol. 3, Whedon, Joss
15. Angel: After The Fall, Vol. 4, Whedon, Joss
16. Angel: After The Fall, Vol. 5 - Aftermath, Armstrong, Kelly
17. The Blind Assassin, Atwood, Margaret - She's such a good writer, but I don't particularly like period pieces. Still, I finished it quickly.
18. The Big Skinny: How I Changed My Fattitude, Lay, Carol - interesting, but a bit obsessive. Graphic novel
19. Earth Abides, Stewart, George R. - post-apocalyptic classic. I need to read more of the classics.
20. Insomnia, King, Stephen - An attempt to assuage my Dark Tower withdrawals. Not one of his best, but okay.
21. A Game of Thrones, (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1)Martin, George R.R. - Read in a glut with the others of the series. So totally worth the reread, I absorbed a lot more and it wasn't so soul-crushingly depressing, as I had some forewarning this time around.

24. The Strain (The Strain Trilogy, #1), Toro, Guillermo Del - Fast and fun, obviously written with a movie treatment in mind
25. A Feast for Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire, #4), Martin, George R.R.
26. The Nobody, Lemire, Jeff - graphic novel about an invisible man
27. Welcome to the Jungle, Butcher, Jim - graphic novel starring Harry Dresden
28. Monsters Are Due on Maple Street: The Twilight Zone, Serling, Rod - graphic novel
29. Walking Distance: The Twilight Zone, Serling, Rod - graphic novel
30. The Twilight Zone: The Odyssey of Flight 33, Serling, Rod - graphic novel
31. Kushiel's Justice (Kushiel's Legacy, #5), Carey, Jacqueline - Imriel is growing up and isn't quite as insufferable any more.
32. Asterios Polyp, Mazzucchelli, David - gorgeously illustrated, quite innovative. A treat to read.
33. Santa Olivia, Carey, Jacqueline - quite unlike the Kushiel novels, I would not have guessed it was the same author, which actually says a lot about her skills. This made a few "best of" lists, I don't think I'd agree, though it was good.
34. Flood, Baxter, Stephen - Forty years of watching the world as we know it end. Very ambitious.
35. Darkfever (Fever, #1), Moning, Karen Marie - fast and entertaining, paranormal pervy chick lit
36. The Armageddon Rag, Martin, George R.R. - I loved this book. But then, how can I not love something that combines heavy metal and the end of the world, written by a fantastic author?
37. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Oz (Buffy the Vampire Slayer Comic #20 Buffy Season 4), Golden, Christopher - almost embarrassed to add this, but hey, it's a book and I read it!
38. The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow, Irving, Washington - Read this one through Daily Lit, where a portion is sent each day via email. Oy to the treatment of woman and minorities, oy. Good story though.
39. Knife of Dreams, (Wheel of Time, #11), Jordan, Robert - reread in preparation for book 12's release
40. The Gathering Storm (Wheel of Time, #12; A Memory of Light, #1), Jordan, Robert and Sanderson, Brian - GOOD BOOK! Stuff finally happens! The kick in the pants the series needed, though RIP RJ, you deserved to see this through.
41. The Year of the Flood, Atwood, Margaret - sequel to "Oryx and Crake," good to know the end of the world isn't as bleak as they were in the eyes of the first novel.
42. Songs of the Dying Earth: Stories in Honor of Jack Vance, Dozois, Gardner R. and various - fun stuff, made me resolve to look up some of Jack Vance's stuff
43. Tales of the Dying Earth, Vance, Jack - even better than #42 led me to believe
44. Fungi from Yuggoth and Other Poems, Lovecraft, H.P. - a reread after I quoted part of one of the poems to someone
45. Hellblazer: Original Sins, Delano, Jamie - well hello there Constantine, you rock.
46. Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Time Of Your Life (Season 8, Vol. 4), Whedon, Joss - I miss you, Buffy
47.Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Predators and Prey (Season 8, Vol. 5), Whedon, Joss - and you Willow, and you Xander, though maybe not you, Dawn. Okay, you too Dawn.
48. Apocalypses and Apostrophes: Short Fiction of John Barnes, Barnes, John - oooh pleasant surprise, a short story set in the "Mother of Storms" universe hiding in there.
49. The Surrogates, Venditti, Robert - graphic novel that the upcoming Bruce Willis movie is based on.
50. Miss Don't Touch Me, Hubert - beautifully illustrated, murder mystery set in a 1930s French brothel. Not kid friendly!
